The Writers' Circle of Durham Region presents
From Politics to Podcast to Leacock Medal with Terry Fallis
Saturday, November 14, 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Fallis will highlight his journey from promotion of the novel on-line, chapter by chapter, to receiving the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, and subsequent publication by McClelland & Stewart in September of 2008. Following the meeting, Ruth E. Walker will lead a one-hour mini workshop: A Recipe for Character Development, divulging some of the secret ingredients that turn underdone characters in your stories into full-flavoured human beings.

The interactive screencast, co-hosted by the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and the Poynter Institute's News University, includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host. The Webinar will be led by Marcy Lowe, a research associate at Duke University's Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness, who studies the environmental impact of specific technologies and industries, with a particular eye toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Humber School for Writers
Correspondence Program in Creative Writing
The Correspondence Program in Creative Writing, offered by The Humber School for Writers, gives aspiring writers the rare opportunity to work on a novel, book of short stories, volume of poetry, or piece of creative non-fiction with one of the School's distinguished faculty. Students receive extensive feedback via either regular or electronic correspondence and learn to refine their craft. Students may also share their experience in a closed web lounge. Each 30-week program is specifically designed for those who prefer working at their own pace and in their own environment. Applicants can choose from these start dates:
