Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

How much does it cost to join PWAC?
The annual fees for PWAC National membership are $265 for professional and associate members and $50 for student members. The Toronto Chapter collects dues of $25 and $10, respectively, from these amounts, which provides direct support for our programs and events. Dues are a tax-deductible expense for self-employed writers and can be paid in monthly instalments. Typically, members recover these costs through the work they generate from being part of PWAC.

How do I qualify for membership?
There are three membership levels: professional, associate and student. Here are the criteria:

Professional membership
1. Published for pay, within the past 24 months, any THREE of the following:
- Magazine or newspaper articles (print or online)
- Major writing projects (e.g., annual reports, newsletters, speeches, brochures; see pwac.ca for full list)
2. Worked for at least one year full-time, or the equivalent part-time, as a staff writer for a magazine or newspaper.
3. Published at least one non-fiction book with a traditional publisher.
4. Self-published at least one non-fiction book that meets PWAC criteria; visit pwac.ca for details.

Associate membership: Published for pay, within the past 12 months, at least ONE non-fiction freelance article or major writing project of at least 300 words. Associate members can access all PWAC benefits and services except executive membership.

Student membership: Registration as a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada. Student members can access a number of PWAC benefits and services.

What professional development and training does the Toronto Chapter offer?

We host monthly seminars from October to May. These are FREE for PWAC members and students. Non-members and people who belong to associate writers’ groups pay a nominal fee. We also offer half- and full-day professional development workshops, and we partner with a professional conference called MagNet in association with Magazines Canada.

What benefits does PWAC Toronto Chapter membership offer?

We have a mentorship program that pairs new writers with experienced members to gain advice and knowledge, and an ambassadorship program where members visit schools and other venues to raise awareness of PWAC. Our social calendar includes Cheers with Peers pub nights and free or low-cost members-only networking events.

Can PWAC help me to get work?
Yes! Many members have found work through their profile on PWAC’s online member directory, writers.ca. Our events, newsletters and listservs offer excellent opportunities to network, make valuable connections and discover new markets.
